The running life of the 3-COP on our suburban rail services is nearly at an end. There are now only 14 left in service, 4 are already awaiting the cutters torch. The 3-CEP units were formed in 1998/9 in order to allow 11-car trains to work along the Hastings line. With the rapidly increasing Class 375 introduction their duties are diminishing, although they are frequently found working with other units, especially during peak periods. After the 3-CEPs were formed the spare TS vehicles were either used to replace the buffets in the converted Class 421/8 units or scrapped. None of these units are to be T.P.W.S fitted and started to be withdrawn from service starting from 31/12/02. I did notice the other day that the 3-COPs seem to have the latest style of AWS, as I Recall hearing the "horn" replaced with the distinctive "burrrrb" and I do presume they have TPWS installed as I think that they could see a little more life yet...........only time can tell

I also have to agree that Im sure I've heard on a 3COP that theres a new type of AWS (cl319 style) and I deffently heard no AWS Bells along route from Brighton - Seaford. Pressumed it WAS the ping/pong aws style (quieter to hear from passenger saloon) Very weird indeed. If someone can identify what unit it was. I know it operated the 12:26 Seaford - Littlehampton and the 17:41 Brighton - Seaford services on Saturday the 5th of April. Any news gratefully recieved. Cheer's Jules www.wagn.connect.to
